Located in a light and spacious classroom on the North Seattle Community College (NSCC) campus, Latona Co-operative preschool works together to facilitate a community of children who are free to WONDER, DISCOVER and EXPERIENCE.” The popular co-operative is affiliated with NSCC’s family of preschool co-operatives that provide parent and early education for families with children from infancy to Pre-K. The co-op is run by parents who work in association with the teacher and NSCC program.

My son was three years old when we entered the co-op preschool system. That was twenty-six years ago. During my tenure as a co-op parent, I worked as a parent coordinator, chairperson, and attended as many PAC speakers and parent education sessions as I could. Still I wanted more, and earned my Early Childhood Education degree from North Seattle Community College. About twenty years ago I started teaching Latona Pre 3’s; three years later, I was hired to teach the 3 to 5 class at Latona. Teaching is my passion: every year is new and exciting.
I believe children’s play is their work, and as they work, they learn skills. These skills build a foundation of life’s most important lessons. Children learn to be social beings at every point in the preschool day: figuring out how to take turns with a toy, asking for the water to be passed at snack time, and being left out in a play activity.I build curriculum around children’s interests, and because of this, the children have a real connection to their learning. Although there is flexibility on my part around curriculum, I have clear expectations about behavior and daily routines. It takes a fewweeks for the children and adults to adjust to the routines and expectations, but my consistency in expectations eases those transitions. Children will make mistakes, and learn to fix those mistakes. In doing so, they will gain a sense of accomplishment.
My first class of preschool students are now nearing their college graduation. Every year I grow more passionate about my profession. I still read, go to workshops and observe children to learn more. I strive to better myself so I can better serve children and their families.
