As play-station time begins, children are able to move about freely, choosing from a wide variety of experiences, including the block and puzzle areas, home center, art area (which includes painting and often a special project), and sensory tables, which include a sand box and other materials. Children also can spend time in the reading loft, where an adult will read to them.
Next up is a small group activity, a short presentation facilitated by a parent in which verbal skills are encouraged. Finally, it’s on to snack time with the children breaking into small groups and eating at tables.
Large-motor activity time comes next. Our site offers a choice of an indoor space as well as outdoor paved area, track and the remodeled “Annie’s Playground.” As often as possible we like to use this time to get outside and let the children run, climb, play ball or dig in the sandbox. During the day, children have the opportunity to take initiative through choice, practice co-operation in large and small groups and persevere through tasks in a supportive environment. Our day closes with the popular circle time, which features a short period for children to play with musical instruments and closes with the group singing several popular songs.
My name is Lisa Behrens and I became a co-op teacher as a direct result of my fantastic experience in the North Seattle Co-op system. I began as a pre-3 parent and again went through from Toddlers to Fives with my second child.
Co-op preschool gives parents an amazing opportunity to be a part of their local community and to network with parents and children. Co-op enables teachers to test learning in a communicative supportive classroom environment.
I take My philosophy as a teacher from Parenting with Love and Logic; Cline and Fay as well as from Birth to Age Five; Leach. In the classroom I work to model, commentate and frame things with a positive encouraging tone. Our Goal is to learn through play. Facial expressions and tone of voice are often the most effective techniques with young kids.
I hold a BA in Communications from Western Washington University with a interest in early childhood education and much focus on sociology, conflict resolution and historical studies about child nurturing. I will continually be surveying other preschool classrooms during the school year to keep updated and energized. I can't wait to pair THIS with my year of teaching experience at Meadowbrook preschool. I think we are in for a very fun year!
