Welcome to Northgate Multi-Age (2-5 years)
Evening Co-op Preschool

At Northgate Multi-Age Evening Co-op we have interactive fun with our children, as well as learn and talk about Early Childhood Development topics. We are unique from other North Seattle Community College (NSCC) sponsored co-ops because we combine both Pre-3 and 3-5 programs (ages 2-5 as of August 31 of the school year), and meet only once a week, in the evening. This allows working parents to participate in the co-op, and we welcome siblings in our class! Students may also concurrently enroll in a daytime NSCC co-op preschool.

Our Teacher

Our teacher is Aldona Mitchell. She has been a parent in the co-op system. She has a degree in Early Childhood Education from North Seattle Community College and has a passion for working with young children and their families. Aldona brings a unique creativity to the classroom with focuses on family support, fun, and a child lead curriculum.

I love working with this particular class. The wider age range is satisfying in that I get to work with those adorable two year olds as well as the older preschoolers. We get lots of siblings and both moms and dads coming creating a diverse group and a family friendly environment. The parents and kids come excited about this time which makes my job a delight.. Aldona Mitchell

Routine

A typical evening begins with about 30 minutes of large motor play followed by 15-20 minutes of singing, movement and stories on the carpet. After this time altogether as a group, we break into two parent groups.

Each week, half the parents meet with an instructor from the college for Parent Education, while the other half sets up and participates in various activity centers with the kids. Parent Education is held in an adjoining room right down the hall from the preschool class, so if you have a worry about being away from your child, the door is always open for your child to come visit you and go back out in the classroom if he/she needs to.

In the last 15 minutes of class, the groups get back together in a closing circle for more singing and good-byes for the evening.

Parent Duties

Basic parent duties are snack and an activity for a small group of children (both come up about 3-5 times per year depending on class size), as well as assisting the teacher in the classroom approximately every other week (when not attending Parent Education). Every parent holds a board or committee position for the year.

Time

We meet once a week on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. We follow the Seattle Public Schools holiday schedule.

Required Parent Meetings (for parents only) are held two evenings per quarter from 6:45-8:45 p.m. These meetings give us a chance to focus on parenting and child development concerns as well as to check on the progress of the class or any other issues that may come up with regard to this program.
