FAM 181: Explore child-guidance skills

Course Overview

Share, discuss, and learn about child guidance with other parents, parents-to-be, and preschool providers.

You will learn:

a four-step process to deal with challenging behavior
to consider children’s temperaments and developmental stages
to use 15 tools from five areas of healthy effective child guidance — avoiding problems, responding to cooperation, acknowledging feelings, setting limits, and teaching new skills
to recognize and avoid common errors using the child guidance tools

Tuition is only $55 for 5 credits. Offered fall quarter only. Internet access is necessary, and there is a $39.22 technology fee.

You will learn theory, apply it to real situations of your choosing, and share questions and observations with others.

Course Content

This online class, including a pre-course assignment, is designed to give students child guidance information in a way that can be easily accessed and fits into the student’s schedule. This course also provides a forum to share questions with other registered parents, nannies, childcare providers, and the instructors teaching this class.

The course has three components:
(1) understanding the STAR Parenting guidance tools and approach,
(2) application of this information to real children, and
(3) dialogue with other participants about their experiences with the material and related issues.
