Val Donato
Val Donato, our full-time faculty and former Parent Education Coordinator, passed away at home on Sunday, April 21st after an extensive and courageous battle with cancer. Val continued to teach her online class up until a couple of weeks of her passing. Our love goes out to her family, our Parent Education Faculty, the coop parents and children, her colleagues here at North, state and country.
Val touched many lives in the Early Childhood Education/Parent Education field. She made an impact wherever she went. Children and their families were her lifelong passion.
Val was hired as a part-time instructor at north in 1974 when her children attended the Cooperative Preschool that was offered here and is still in existence today. She was hired as a full-time tenure track faculty in 1992 and achieved tenure 3 years later.
Mary Margaret Brown captured the essence of Val in her sentiments on Friday, April 12th through the following:
"I want to especially thank Val for all her dedication to Early Childhood Education. Her knowledge, experience, patience, and "true grit" has helped make the NSCC Parent Ed program the blue ribbon program it is today. I am aware of all the extra time and dedication she has given, not only to our program at NSCC, but to the Parent Education Program and the Coop Preschool Program at the state level. Personally, she opened a new world to me in Parent Education of the Preschool Infant, toddler and preschool age-child after my many years working with parents of medically and developmentally high risk infants and children. It was through her patience and guidance that I discovered my own strengths and satisfaction in working with these parents in our preschools."
More information about Val and the award established a few years ago in her name is available at the link to the right for the Val Donato Award.
Though absent from us physically, her spirit lives in us and beyond and we will miss her dearly.
We will send out more information as we receive it from the family.
